How is a passage index different from qualitative coding software?
A passage index focuses on exact retrieval, context, source revision, verification notes, and handoff of selected ranges, while qualitative-analysis platforms may support broader coding, memos, queries, collaboration, and methodological analysis.
Use the smaller tool for a smaller job
When the deliverable is a reviewed quote set or finding aid, a bounded local workroom can be easier to audit and hand off. Write the decision in plain language and retain the original source separately so the index can be audited against something outside the browser project.
Do not imply methodological sufficiency
A quote index does not implement grounded theory, inter-coder reliability, sampling, saturation, causal inference, or research validity. Review the result as a retrieval aid rather than a conclusion. Human-authored fields must remain visibly distinct from exact source-derived text.
Export for the next system
CSV, JSON, HTML, and checkpoint outputs should preserve exact source and interpretation boundaries for authorized downstream work. Carry the limitation into the frozen edition and passive handoff so a recipient can understand what was checked, what was not checked, and what remains their responsibility.
